What peer support looks like here

Peer support at Grief and Loss In Moton is:

  • Non-clinical - not therapy, but care rooted in shared humanity

  • Trauma-informed - emphasizing safety, choice, and emotional regulation

  • Guided by empathy - not credentials

We don't need letters after our names to be with someone in grief but we do respect those who do.

We meet you where you are, with presence, permission, and patience.

The Companioning Approach in Practice

We don't...                                    We do...

Diagnose or treat                                          Sit with and listen

Give advice or solution                                 Ask gentle, open-ended questions

Lead or fix                                                     Walk beside

Push people to "move on"                           Honor where they are

Require artistic skill                                      Invite expression through making

Companioning Through Making

In a Maker:Grief peer setting, we may...

  • Create a Grief Map together

  • Sit quietly while assembling a Memory Tile

  • Share a story while sewing part of a Community Quilt

  • Gently reflect with a Journal Prompt, like:
    "What am I holding today?"
    "What needs to be witnessed?"

Sometimes we talk. Sometimes we don't. But we're there. That's what matters.

A Note About Roles

Maker:Grief peer support is not therapy and does not require certification.

We are not experts. We are fellow travelers. We believe you are the expert of your grief and we are honored to hold space with you.

If you're supporting someone through grief - a friend, a partner, a teen, a coworker — you can companion them using these principles. You don't need to get it "right." You just need to be present.
